The Hope Center in Anchorage, Alaska started as a small soup kitchen in the mid 80's providing to food to the hungry in downtown Anchorage from a small building. Today the Hope Center has an emergency shelter which houses 70 women each night, including 3 meals a day. They offer counseling and training. They have a Culinary Training school for both men and women to gain skills and knowledge in the culinary world. They also have a Bakery School for women only (To provide a safe place for women who may have had traumatic experiences with men.) Here they learn the art of baking and business as they supply and operate a local food truck. The Hope Center has an appartement building, Sweet Hope, offering transitional housing to women as they navigate independent living and healing.
“I started to volunteer once a month spending an evening with the ladies in the shelter just visiting and singing songs. I always leave feeling encouraged by these amazing women working so hard to heal.” - LaDonna
